When we have a huge amount of figures and statistics in addition to a huge amount of information, there is an urgent need of an efficient system that can combine them in an organized, simple and professional way in order to clearly and efficiently present them to the readers or the viewers. This is the so-called “data journalism” in terms of media. This training course is designed for journalists working in printed press or in TV channels to provide them with the skills of gathering information and present it visually in an efficient way.
Course Objective
At the end of the course, participants should:
– Learn how to gather, sort out and use a data base
– Learn how to visually present information in an inspiring and interactive way.
Course Outline
• Introduction to data journalism:
– Exploring the data journalism: access to the information and editorial advantages
– Panorama of success stories worldwide
– Proposing new and funny cognitive content to the public
– Monitoring a “data journalism” project: why? How? And with whom? (technicians, graphic designers)
– Precisely identifying the searched information and data base
• Tools and mechanism of information formulation
– Modus operandi of data bases: criteria, formats, tables, scopes, filtration, sorting, data feeding.
– How to use spreadsheets (Open Office, Excel) for data sorting and feeding
– Basics of Statistics: samples, population, estimates, average, standard deviation, scope
– Mistakes that should be avoided when reading or presenting statistics
– Data filming: choosing the right format of the tables according to the gathered data (statistics scalar, circular tables, points cloud…)
• Data filming techniques:
– Localization and using maps
– Data filming tools (Google Fusion Tables, Tableau Public, …)
– Creating a joint data base: how to do it, advantages and limitations, how to involve users?
